James Stewart Jewell,
M.D.
September 8, 1837 - April 18, 1887 |
This note to his sister Josephine was written shortly after the death of Dr.
Jewell's wife, Mary Jewell. She died November 26th, 1883. At that time Dr. Jewell
had a governess care for the children. Later his sister Clara took over those
responsibilities. Dr. Jewell speaks of going south. Since his health was poor,
it was not unusual for Dr. Jewell to winter in Florida. We know from other correspondence
that he wintered in Florida. The Stewart he speaks of here is one of his sons.
It is said that Stewart eventually became a lawyer.

My Dear Sister,
I am yet confined to my house. But I am better than I was, and have every prospect of recovery so I believe. The weather is cold, very, and it would be unsafe for me to go out at present. But for the illness of Stewart, I would have been south before this time. But he seemed clearly on the mend. I do not now know, whether or not, I will go south, that is, if I continue to mend. It will be possible for me to finish some of my writing, if I am able to do it. The rest of my family are well. Our old governess cares with the children, and does well, and faithfully. We are doing the best we can. The children are happy as they could be expected to be. I write as soon after writing my last one, because I know you will feel an interest in hearing from us, and because I have more time in which to write. Hereafter I do hope we may keep track of each other more closely. I do earnestly hope I may find a chance to see you and your family this year. If I get well enough, I must visit mother. Write me soon as you can and give my love to your children and your husband.
Your Devoted Brother,
J. S. Jewell
